Hi, I learned spanish by watching canned telenovelas from mexico and venezuela,since my grandmother loves to watch those telenovelas, at first I just learned the story thru their actions and because of those catchy songs and by watching it almost everyday I was able to understand the story and speak spanish, though not as good as a native speaker but still its passable as someone who only learned spanish in telenovelas.
The first spanish words I learned are the numbers, they are very easy, I think I can count in spanish up to millions ;), I think studying numers in Spanis is a good start in learning the language.

writing the spelling of the numbers in Spanish is very difficult for me….
